Software Designer- NAMN011475 Job Description
The Software Developer is an important member of the VPS project team. The VPS project is one of the few Metso international strategic “Must Win” projects. The Software Developer is a high level computer programmer.
He/she will first help to list and compare technical options for two major deliverables of the VPS project:
- A smart data base that will host sensitive information, conveniently accessible to authorized users spread around the world.
- An advanced modular dynamic simulator of mineral processing plants.
He/she will be in charge of specification, development and documentation of the selected solutions, jointly with the software designer. He /she will help to the deployment of the selected solutions.
This role requires little or no traveling.
Metso is a large international group, a leader in its markets and a developer of technology for the mining industry. After a minimum of two years in this position, there will be numerous development opportunities, locally as well as abroad.
It is essentially a technical position that requires some travelling internationally, in particular to USA. The APC engineer spends a lot of time with customers during the implementation of the contracts, and must be able to establish a good and mastered communication with customers.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Get acquainted with mineral processing plant simulation and with the VPS concept.
- Contribute to analyzing options for the data base and the simulation platform.
- Design, develop, test and document VPS software package.
- Specify, develop and document the selected solutions, cooperatively with the software designer. The programing languages and software engineering methods that will be used will be determined at the early stages of the project.
- Implement QA/QC procedures.
- Contribute to setting up a permanent support and maintenance function for the solutions implemented.
- Perform other miscellaneous duties and/or other special projects as required.
RELATIONSHIPS - Reports to VPS Project Manager, based in France.
- Works as a team with the VPS software designer.
- Works with the other VPS team members (modeling engineers and product line engineers from 10 product lines and 5 sites).
- Interacts with other personnel at the office (20 people, essentially APC staff and administration).
- Occasionally interacts with Metso customers and other Metso offices.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL INTERFACES - VPS project manager (direct supervisor)
- Members of VPS modeling team and software development team in France and in North America
- Frequent contacts with APC software development team in the same office (3 engineers)
- R&D and technology teams in France, USA and Canada.
- Limited contacts with product lines in USA (3 sites) and Sweden principally
- Metso services in France, for miscellaneous administrative purposes

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- University Degree. BS or MS level, in software development and computing technology. An additional background in process engineering or chemical engineering would be beneficial.
- Software engineer, with good knowledge of modern programing techniques for Windows and iOS environments.
- 2 to 5 years' relevant experience. The level of autonomy will be adapted to the experience of the person.
- Talented and passionate computer programmer.
- No management or supervisory experience required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES - Fluency in computer programing with experience of several languages such as C++, Ruby, Python, C#, ActionScript, JavaScript, Objective-C, html, Java.
- Knowledge and experience of data bases is a plus.
- Experience of programing for iOS is welcome.
- Communicates fluently in English.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Good ability to quickly understand users expectations.
- Ability to work in a team as well as autonomously.
- Develop strong trusting relationships in order to gain support and achieve results.
- Manage multiple conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
