Earth Observation Mission Payload Engineer Job Description
This role is for delivering a Spacecraft Operations Engineering service in the family of Earth Observation missions (initially SWARM and Cryosat-2).
The primary areas of responsibility for this service are Systems Engineering services but the service provider may be requested to assume the responsibility and perform activities for additional subsystems or systems within the scope of general SOE services, including test, validation and operation of the Mission Control System, Mission Planning System and Simulator.
This is a job for an experienced Engineer looking for a sustainable and social work environment with future development opportunities. He/She will be directly located on customer site at ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany.
It is full-time and permanent position requiring occasional travel within Europe. Deadline for submission is 17.02.2017 and expected start date will be earliest in May 2017.
Responsibilities/Duties
The general activities to be supported by this service are:
- Responsibility in the area of on-board instruments like: Magnetometers, Accelerometers, Laser Range Reflectors, GNSS/GPS Receivers, Radar Altimeters
- Study of Project specific Characteristics and Ground Segment Documentation
- Preparation of Functional Requirements for the Project dedicated Flight Control Software
- Participation in the Analysis and Design of Satellite Operations
- Preparation of Functional Requirements for the Project dedicated Flight Control Ground Facilities
- Preparation of Flight Control and Contingency Procedures
- Mission Management and Mission Planning Support
- On-Board Software Maintenance Support
- Production of Project specific Software Validation and Satellite Interface Validation Test (SVT) Procedures, Reports and Participation in SVTs
- Participation in the System Operations Validation Test (SOV), Training and Simulation Programmes
- Participation in Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) and Mission Critical Operations
- General Flight Control Support
- Spacecraft Performance Analysis

Earth Observation Mission Payload Engineer Job Requirements
Qualifications/Experience
University degree or equivalent education in Electric or Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering.
Essential Skills
- Spacecraft subsystem knowledge (Cryosat-2 and Swarm Payloads)
- Experience in activities applicable to spacecraft operations
- Fluency in English, both in speech and writing
- Ability to coordinate and interact with othern service providers in operations and other fields (team player)
- Ability to work independently
- The ability to multi-task efficiently; working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missionssimultaneously.
Desirable Skills- Familiarity with the ESOC environment
- Familiarity with satellite control systems, inparticular SCOS-2000
- Some experience dealing with external interfaces, e.g. Project, Industry, PDGS
- Familiarity with operational simulators, especially the ones based on SimSat
- Familiarity with low Earth orbit satellites
- Familiarity with ground stations (station setup, station control processes, scheduling processes)
- Familiarity with pre-launch development, integration and testing of ground and space segments
- Familiarity with MOIS
