    Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in the Netherlands. It is a collaboration between four Dutch universities and the funding agency FOM and offers a vibrant setting for cutting edge scientific research. Nikhef employs about 295 people, of whom about 195 physicists. The Nikhef laboratory provides excellent technical equipment and is staffed with 75 technicians and engineers. The institute coordinates and supports major activities in experimental subatomic physics in the Netherlands, such as the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Nikhef also participates in experiments in the research fields of gravitational waves, cosmic rays and astroparticle physics. Knowledge and technology transfer to third parties, i.e. industry, society and the general public, is an integral part of Nikhef’s mission. Nikhef has its own state-of-the-art data centre for internal as well as external customers.

    IC design engineer (dig.) Job Description

    The Challenge
    As a full time IC design engineer you will work in challenging multi-disciplinary environment in multi-site IC design projects. The IC designs consist of digital- and mixed-signal circuits and you will have the availability of state-of-the-art IC design tools. You will optimize ASIC designs and specifications for High Energy Physics experiments or in R&D applications in close collaboration with experimental physicists and physics PhD students.
     
    Key responsibilities for the position:

    • Active participation in digital IC design projects & teams, that involves the full design-flow:
    • from specification, design, layout and verification, to tape-out and IC test.
    • IC Design tool (CAD) management for IC team (~3-6 members): Cadence, Synopsys, MG Calibre, PDK’s, design repositories, etc.
    The offer
    The candidate will be employed by the FOM-foundation. He/she will receive a 2 year contract. The gross monthly salary varies from approx. € 3.000,- to € 4.100,-, depending on level of education and experience of the candidate. This salary is excluding fixed extra allowances of a month’s salary in May and December. Among the attractive secondary conditions are the inclusion in the Dutch government Pension fund, and an amount of 8 weeks holiday per year. The conditions of employment of the FOM-foundation are laid down in the Collective Labor Agreement for Research Centers (CAO-Onderzoeksinstellingen), more information is available at the website www.fom.nl.

    IC design engineer (dig.) Job Requirements

    Requirements:

    • Creative in translating design specifications into full custom IC design that matches the requirements of experimental physics projects (e.g. related to particle detectors @ CERN).
    • Experience or ascertainable interest in digital design flow, design and verification methodologies (TLM, UVM, syst. Verilog, etc.) with top level integration and simulation is a preference.
    • Good communication skills; able to work in (international) teams.
    • Skills & ambitions in publishing results in project meetings, workshops and conferences.
    • Language: fluent English & Dutch (or willing to learn).
