    Manufacturing Engineer Job Description

    Description
    The Manufacturing Engineers at our company will be responsible for the manufacturing readiness of new Lightyear products and sustain ongoing production as the owner of the process. Manufacturing readiness preparation starts by engaging with the R&D team with the purpose of improving the manufacturability of the product design during development phase. It ends by handing over the production line up and running smoothly to the operations team. Following the production ramp-up phase, the manufacturing team moves to a supporting position.

    You will join the team during the industrialization phase of our first car the Lightyear One. During this period, you will closely work with design engineers to ensure manufacturing is taken into account in product development. You are expected to translate the product requirements into manufacturing requirements in consolidation with quality, safety, procurement and other stakeholders. 

    You will design the production layout, manufacturing processes and lead the preparations for the production line. You will be responsible to manage your part of the manufacturing project in line with the program management and report the progress. 

    Following the trial productions (prototypes) and the launch of the production line fulfilling the team objectives, you will hand over the lead to the operations team. Thereafter, you will support the operations by performing daily tasks, introduce changes into the line and seek for alternative ways of working with a continuous improvement mindset!

    As located in the centre of multiple departments, you will need cross-functional leadership attributes and advanced soft skills for this key role. We are offering you a front seat throughout the development of our first car, the Lightyear One! 
    An unique, self charging solar-electrical car and an opportunity to work with latest production techniques required to produce the cars of the future!

    Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with design teams to ensure manufacturing requirements are secured in the product development phase
    • Translate design deliverable into manufacturing specifications.
    • Lead a part of the manufacturing project.
    • Design the production layout and processes.
    • Define the requirements for manufacturing.
    • Facilitate Process-FMEA workshops.
    • Search the latest production techniques and implement the feasible ideas in manufacturing environment.
    • Design and develop in-house fixtures, tools and simple equipment.
    • Prepare technical specifications with equipment engineers for the outsource projects ensuring quality and safety requirements.
    • Manage outsourced manufacturing projects with suppliers from ordering till commissioning.
    • Create and maintain the manufacturing procedures and documentation such as process sheets, control plans and relevant documents.
    • Lead the production during the pilot productions and deliver a smoothly running production line to operations team.
    • Monitor and control the processes by using SPC.
    • Measure and monitor the cycle times, labor content and machine times to find the bottlenecks and lead kaizens to improve them.
    • Confront the production issues by conducting root cause analysis and take corrective actions.
    • Contribute to Lightyear’s mission by choosing energy efficient systems to reduce the carbon footprint and contribute a better future

    Manufacturing Engineer Job Requirements

    Requirements

    • Bachelor or Master degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or similar
    • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience preferably in automotive manufacturing environment
    • Good communication skills in English is a must and Dutch is a plus
    • Advanced AutoCad skills and basic Catia knowledge
    • Familiarity with Process FMEA, lean production tools, root cause analysis, problem solving techniques
    • Cross-functional leadership with good communication skills
    • Willing to adapt to work with latest automotive production techniques
    • Six Sigma, FMEA, problem solving techniques, root cause analysis, and other work related technical certifications and/or experience are important assets.
    • Work experience in manufacturing environment with lightweight materials, solar systems, electrical vehicles and/or EV components are important assets for the role.
