Senior Electronics Design Engineer Job Description

The Image Engineering Laboratory within the School of Computer Science is a world leader in the design and manufacture of CMOS imaging sensors. It has recently announced the World’s largest radiation-hard sensor for medical imager.  It wishes to expand its capabilities to include the design, realisation and testing of supporting electronics and software. This post will be a key appointment in providing these enhanced functions within a small, dispersed but enthusiastic research team.

To work closely with CMOS designers, system end-users and external parties and companies to develop system solutions for our increasing range of novel sensors. 


Key Responsibilities

• In association with end-users, other designers, etc. develop functional specifications in response to user/customer requirements.
• Develop designs for data acquisition systems including DSP and FPGA-based sensor controllers, high-speed camera interfaces (GigE, Camera Link, USB, etc.), and associated firmware and software.
• Assist in testing camera systems with end-users at various scientific facilities (may include overseas travel).
• Producing documentation and contributing to scientific and technical papers.
• Customer and supplier facing activities including interactions with scientists and clinicians as well as industry suppliers and customers.
• Management of projects, including financial responsibilities, in collaboration with project managers.

• Experienced electronics designer able to assume responsibility for complex systems, including embedded design with a wide range of skills. For example:

1. Analogue design (discrete level and device level designs)
2. High-level digital (Micro controller, DSP, FPGA, etc), and low power design techniques.
3. Good software engineering practice

• Some experience of implementing signal/ image processing algorithms in firmware.
• Some experience of Safety Critical, including medical software design
• Able to lead technical discussions with individuals with a wide range of epertise and specialities.
• Management of technical staff and supervision/support for research staff.

Senior Electronics Design Engineer Job Requirements

• First degree with Class 2:1 or above in electronic engineering or a cognate subject.
• Solid technical ability in board and product-level electronics design, in particular; microprocessors, interfaces to sensors, power management.
• Proven record in developing products through the full development life cycle from specifications to transfer to manufacture.
• Experience of requirements management, risk management activities such as FMEA, verification testing, EMC and safety approvals. 

• First degree with Class 2:1 or better in electronic/computer engineering or a cognate discipline. 
• Full design cycle responsibility for electronic/software projects – including embedded system and real-time operation.
• Comprehensive electronic design, fabrication and test abilities.
• Embedded software design experience with some knowledge of higher-level languages.
• Requirements gathering and documentation product.
• Flexibility and adaptability
• Enthusiasm and commitment
• Maintain and build working relationships with users, customers, suppliers, etc.
• Good team working skills
• Basic office skills
• Ability to commute between campuses
• Ability to travel abroad

• Involvement with imaging devices/systems, cameras, video, data communications.
