Assistant or Associate Professor in computer architectures and/or compilers Job in Delft, Netherlands

Assistant or Associate Professor in computer architectures and/or compilers Job Description

Assistant or associate professor in computer architectures and/or compilers
    Delft, 36-40 hours per week

Realising the potential of disruptive computing engines.

Disruptive Computing Engines will enable revolutionary developments in science and society that require far greater and more efficient computing power than currently available. For instance, while future quantum computers promise to solve problems that are intractable for even today's most powerful supercomputers, small and intermediate-scale quantum processors can already run small quantum algorithms. As another example, neuromorphic computing will be orders of magnitude more energy-efficient, as necessary for applications such as edge AI and personalised medicine.

The mission of TU Delft's Quantum and Computer Engineering (QCE) department is to invent, design, prototype and demonstrate the potential of disruptive computing engines by harnessing unique features of emerging devices, e.g., qubits, memristors, spintronics, and graphene. Building such computing engines requires a full-stack interdisciplinary approach, encompassing fabrication and operation of qubits, electronic circuit design, micro-architecture, programming models, compilers and simulator platforms.

QCE's research encompasses a broad range of applications, integrating multiple layers of the stack:

    • The computing and network architecture, including AI-oriented architectures, quantum architectures, neuromorphic architectures, computation-in-memory architectures, big-data architectures, and secure architectures.
    • The interface to the technology such as Cryo-CMOS circuit design, memristive-based and graphene-based circuit design, and test and reliability of integrated circuits.
    • Related programming and support flow including compilers, mapping tools, and simulators.

To make quantum computing a reality, QCE is collaborating with QuTech, the worldwide leading research centre on Quantum Technology, Computing and Internet founded by TU Delft and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Together, they are working intensively on developing, designing and prototyping scalable quantum computing engines based on different quantum technologies.

QCE is inviting applications for an assistant or associate professor in the field of computer architectures and/or compilers who is eager to carry out research on quantum computation and collaborate on architectures and compilers for other emerging computing platforms.

In this position, you will focus on topics related to computer architectures and/or compilers. You are expected to have a research background and research interest in quantum-computing topics and other emerging computing platforms, including but not limited to:
    • Quantum compilers.
    • Quantum simulators.
    • Quantum computer architecture.
    • Emerging computing paradigms and accelerators.
    • High-level synthesis and application profiling.
    • High-performance and energy-efficient computing.

You will actively participate in multidisciplinary collaboration with colleagues within QCE and from QuTech. You will also contribute to the development and teaching of quantum and non-quantum computing courses and educational programmes at BSc and MSc level and supervise PhD and MSc students, write project proposals, and participate in faculty committees.

Assistant or Associate Professor in computer architectures and/or compilers Job Requirements

    • The ambition to be a future scientific leader in the area of quantum computing.
    • Experience in leading and managing research programs is a plus.
    • An affinity with teaching, preferably with teaching experience at bachelor and/or master level and experience in supervising MSc and/or PhD students.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

An appreciation for a culturally diverse environment and the ability to build relationships and work in a team.

    Challenge. Change. Impact!

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
