    Software Community Manager Job Description

    The Computational Science and Digital Innovation VP-ship (CSDI) is Shell’s primary centre for innovation and cutting-edge research in data science and artificial intelligence.

    CSDI has special relevance in conducting next generation research and development to support Shell’s move to industry 4.0 and its contribution to the energy transition. CSDI is also committed to the highest quality of applied research, and contributing to the open data science research ecosystem, for example through work on Open Source data science software.

    What’s the role?
    As the Software Community Manager, you will be driving the growth and success of communities working on Inner Source and Open Source projects within CSDI. Inner Source Projects build reusable components using the same development philosophies as Open Source but where the code repository remains internal to Shell. Building strong and thriving communities around these cross-discipline projects where people can learn, contribute and grow is vital to the success of these projects and those participating in them.

    The Software Community Manager is accountable for:

    • Building, managing, and supporting communities working on Inner Source and where appropriate Open Source Projects
    • Creating and managing new community programs by engaging and encouraging others across Shell to become contributors and participants in Inner Source and Open Source projects
    • Working with Shell’s exciting technology partners to assist, contribute and support communities
    • Moderating, engaging, and technically supporting users in forums including GitHub, Slack, Teams and Yammer
    • Organising meetups, events, and other engagements
    • Coordinating with other departments such as product engineering, and content marketing to support community initiatives and share their progress with wider audiences
    • Track community engagement through various metrics and KPIs that will be reported to stakeholders
    • Advise on tooling and technology that can be adopted to support communities
    • Communicating and celebrating successes as well as failures
    The Software Community Manager will also need to drive innovation and research through market analysis and keep up to date with the latest emerging methods and technology trends related to managing communities as well as best practices in the context of software development.
    The Software Community Manager will be involved in projects that focus on the following areas of CSDI:

    The Team
    You will report to the Chief Digital Technology Advisor, who is based in UK. You will need to play a leadership role to non-direct reports across many areas of the CSDI VPship and (technology) associated IDT organization. On a quarterly basis, you will need to provide an update to the CSDI leadership team. You will be working with natural teams and on projects to deliver production grade solutions based on innovative technologies from several disciplines such as Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Software Engineers.

    You will work closely with the Principal Software Architect who is responsible for architecting reusable software for Inner Source Projects and who is also responsible for identifying opportunities to work with Open Source projects and communities.

    Additionally, you will engage with the CSDI team leads to ensure Inner Source principles become embedded in the ways of working of each group.

    Location and Travel
    The role is based in our NL/UK offices.

    Software Community Manager Job Requirements

    What we need from you
    You should have proven Community Management experience in relevant fields, markets and segments and have deep knowledge and previous success in building and managing communities. Effective stakeholder management (both external and internal) at various levels will be essential in bringing others along on the journey to build successful communities that you will be accountable to lead.

    It will be advantageous if you have had the experience of navigating through a large multinational, as well as having worked in a high-growth, tech start-up environment that demonstrates the following:

    • Leadership and overseeing development projects to meet design and architecture standards
    • Problem solving and conflict resolution
    • Communication of the strategy, deadlines, and expectations
    • Coaching and inspiration to educate and grow communities
    • Organised, detailed and systematic thinking
    • Creative solutions to challenging problems
    Other Requirements:
    • Preferably a Bachelors/Master’s degree in computer science or similar discipline
    • Extensive industry experience Community Management related to Software, Inner Source, Open Source or similar
    • Several years of experience with software version management tools like git
    • Understanding and familiarity with Software Engineering best practices
    • Build rapport and communicate frequently
    • Ensure diversity in any board, committee, or group
    • Facilitate effective communication across time zones, cultures, etc.
    • Appreciate the long-term rewards of building a community along with valuable skills.
    • Knowledge and experience of applying of systems thinking methodologies for managing organisational change
