    Optical Engineer

    Customer and Location
    Our customer is a world leader in lighting technologies, based in The Netherlands.

    Tasks and Responsibilities
    As an Optical Engineer you will be focussed on innovative systems or components using LED technology for all business lines of the company. Together with a team of architects and experienced optical engineers, you work on optical designs for several projects like automotive lighting, street lighting, etc.
    Together with a project team of engineering experts you strive to bring the projects to the best result possible. Since technical risks and uncertainties are not uncommon in these projects, your technical skills will be put to the test to handle these. You can use your creativity to the fullest by coming up with new solutions and innovations.

    • Translate customer requirements into functional specifications (optical related);
    • Select proper optical concept, design and optimize the optical system, define the right materials for the optical system in order to meet performance requirement and/or material regulation;
    • Design and organize optical experiments, verify and improve optical design by analysis the measurement data;
    • Work together with mechanical engineer to release optical parts (lens, reflector and etc.) and its tooling together at supplier(s) according to procedure;
    • Define the component specification and release criteria (including process capability requirement), organize trails, and tests, and deliver release report with analysis and conclusion;
    • Actively participate and contribute to the optical competence team;
    • Follow the procedure to maintain and contribute to the optical database of optical designs and optical tooling;
    • Actively work on and contribute to competences’ programs lead either by optics team or other competence teams;
    • Scout new optical materials, support and contribute to the new optical materials evaluation and release;
    • Share the knowledge and learning to the team;
    • Define new design rules;
    • Build up and maintain contacts with a network of optical specialists and specialists in related disciplines, in particular within Philips but also outside Philips;
    • Advise the management about optical matters/ issues and road mapping;
    • Coaching of less experienced colleagues in the field of optics.

    Optical Engineer Job Requirements

    Experience and Education

    • University level education, preferably in Physics, Optics, or Optical Engineering;
    • > 10 years of relevant working experience;
    • Capability to design optical (sub)systems for products of Philips Lighting: lenses, collimators, light-engines, reflectors, including color-dependencies therein.
    • Capability to evaluate, judge and/or re-engineer optical systems designed by others, within the relevant field;
    • Capability to select right materials for optical purpose;
    • Capability to judge the manufacturability of optical design and follow up with supplier to make that;
    • Experience with optical simulation tools, in particular in the non-imaging optics area, like ASAP, LightTools, Traceproor Zemax Non-Sequential, are preferred;
    • Good team work spirit and good initiative;
    • Good oral and written English skills;
    • Willingness to travel.
