Optical & Opto-Electronics Engineer

Context
For one of our main customers ESA/ESTEC, we are currently looking for an Optical & Opto-Electronics Engineer, who will give support within the Opto-Electronics Section (TEC-MME). This Section deals with opto-electronic device technologies and applications, including laser technologies, photonic integrated optics, non-linear optics, superconductor technology, far infra-red heterodyne instrument design and verification above 1 THz, detector technology and radiometry for the X-Ray, UV, IR and far-IR. For these technical domains, the Section provides support to projects, participates in the definition and execution of R&D programmes, contributes to ESA's project review activities and participates in the preparation of standards, design requirements and engineering guidelines. As part of its operations, the Section defines, maintains and operates the Opto-Electronics Laboratory Unit, which forms integral part of the ESTEC Optics and Opto-Electronics Laboratory.

Tasks and Responsibilities
You will support activities in an Opto-Electronics Laboratory by performing the following tasks:

• Day-to-day operation and maintenance of the laboratory, comprising general maintenance and servicing of photonic and opt-electronic measurement and test equipment;
• Procurement of laboratory materials, components, equipment as appropriate for the operation of the laboratory;
• Stock and equipment inventory tracking;
• Logging of all laboratory activities;
• Implementation of safety rules;
• Planning, setting-up and execution of experiments and measurements as agreed with Customers;
• Analysis, evaluation, reporting and interpretation of measurement data and results;
• Provision of expert advice on electro-optical verification methods and photonic material issues in support to ESA projects and technology R&D.

Optical & Opto-Electronics Engineer Job Requirements

Experience and Education

• Academic degree in Opto-Electronics, Optics or Physics;
• Minimum of 2 -3 years of practical laboratory experience in the design, development and verification of photonics system. In particular high power laser systems, together with a good knowledge of associated data collection and data evaluation software tools (e.g. LabView);
• Proven familiarity with Laser Induced Contamination (LIC) and Laser Induced Damage Testing (LIDT), specifically design, engineering and management of related measurement set-ups and assessment of test results;
• Experience of vacuum systems, optical systems, laser beam characterization, and image processing (e.g. Matlab) required;
• Confidence with LIDT ISO standards and, more generally, with ISO 17025 for test and measurement laboratory accreditation is an asset;
• Knowledge of LIDAR principles of operation is a benefit as well basic principle of environmental testing of space hardware;
• Good technical assessment capabilities and solid communication skills (verbal and in writing).
