Principal Consultant (HSE Engineer)

Function
The position of consultant has a clear and definite focus on managing projects for major national-and international companies. These clients are generally large industrial companies requiring expert advice from ERM in terms of complex issues from an Environmental, Health and Safety point of view. (EHS) For performance & assurance, the consultant is responsible for developing and maintaining environmental, health and safety programs to help companies understand and act upon their liabilities and compliance obligations.
Companies, especially active in the oil & gas, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and chemical sector continue to anticipate legislative requirements and need help in developing innovative assurance processes and management systems. Moreover, organizations are considering a wide range of initiatives to transform their safety culture.
The consultant is able to develop employee engagement methods and develop safety leadership. The scope of each project is most of the time determined via direct client contacts or via an RFP (request for proposal) and is then presented by ERM’s experts through a thorough proposal and a clear presentation. This implies that within each project the ERM consultant brings added value to the company.
The consultant is mainly active in the following fields: EHS Compliance assistance, permitting, EHS performance improvement projects, corporate audit programs, transaction audits, management systems Other fields may include information systems, health and safety, behavioral safety, process safety, social/supply chain services, product stewardship (Reach etc), energy and water efficiency. Being an expert in these matters, the consultant must have the ability to work efficiently with his clients, to which he must be able to formulate critical questions and offer creative answers. He/She must therefore be extremely analytical and result-driven. The complexity of the project being multiple, a good understanding of the stress related to strategic management consulting combined with the extensive expert knowledge is essential.

Besides being communicative and client-oriented, the projects must be managed cost-efficiently, respecting the timeframes in which the objectives and solutions have been proposed. Audits and compliance matters are highly confidential and thus require a discrete and diplomatic approach. Reporting being an essential part of the job, the consultant needs excellent writing skills in order to provide clients and the team with analytical, complete and well-written reports. This is mostly done in English, as it is the main working language for most of our corporate clients. However French is essential as being the working language of authorities and most site level personnel. As principal consultant, other responsibilities include business development and coaching more junior team members as part of the job.
