    BAE Systems Maritime Submarine is home to the UK's most extensive submarine and warship design capabilities. In addition to being the only designer and builder of UK nuclear submarines, we're also contributing to the UK's future aircraft carrier programme and applying our expertise to civil nuclear power generation opportunities.   We’re currently looking for a Naval Architect to join our team in Barrow-in-Furness.    This a fantastic opportunity for a Naval Architecture or Engineering graduate to work on one of the most advanced Submarine design and build programmes in the world, and will give you the chance to hone your skills in a professional and innovative environment.    As well as the base salary we offer a full range of benefits, including pension, paid annual leave, health care schemes, Share Incentive plans, and numerous others. In return we're looking for you to display a passion for engineering, particularly maritime engineering, and the desire to contribute to a cutting edge programme of works.  

    As a Naval Architect your main responsibilities will involve:   

    • Undertaking functional design and/or providing specialist advice and qualification of their scope of responsibility and provide evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose.
    • Obtaining confirmation, beyond reasonable doubt, by review, surveillance and audit that those assumptions, underpinning engineering data, analysis methodologies, and interpretation of results have been validated.
    • Producing evidence in support of qualification, legislative requirements and safety justifications and provide specialist support for associated activities.
    • Contributing to identification and rapid closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages and to manage the resulting change embodiment activities.
    • Liaising with both internal and external customers as required ensuring that their requirements are adequately supported and that their needs are fully considered and incorporated where appropriate and agreed.
    • Providing realistic programme status, identifying problem areas and implementing agreed recovery plans.
    • Defining the qualification obligations for the assurance hold points during build, test and commissioning.
    • Providing support for assurance that the design is adequate i.e. it is robust, in providing supporting documentation for the safety case.
    • Providing support to the Certificate of Design activities appropriate to the discipline.

    Engineer - Naval Architect Job Requirements

    As a Naval Architect your skills and qualifications will ideally include:   

    • A demonstrable understanding of the challenges posed by the environment that the product will be exposed to.
    • Capable of, and willing to, work towards appropriate Professional Institution membership
    • Recent Degree / MSc / PhD qualification or equivalent in the appropriate discipline - Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering / Yacht & Powerboat Design etc
    • Knowledge of the capabilities and the most appropriate uses of specialized analysis tools.
    • Knowledge or at least recognition of relevant engineering standards (including safety and environmental regulations).
    • Recognition of the limits of own knowledge so that specialist support and development can be sought.
    • Sufficient experience to be able to identify all the issues involved in area of responsibility.
