The Center for Medical Genetics, Ghent University Hospital, opens a vacancy for a PhD fellowship on a research project entitled:

“Unraveling the molecular etiopathogenesis in inherited cutis laxa syndromes”.

Cutis laxa syndromes are heritable connective tissue disorders characterized by excessive skin folds and variable systemic manifestations in the cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, and urological systems, the skeleton, lungs, ocular and central nervous system. Recently enormous progress has been made in the identification of genetic defects at the basis of these disorders. These genetic defects implement abnormalities in the assembly of the extracellular matrix, disturbed growth factor signaling, and dysfunction of the endoplasmatic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. Using cell-based systems and animal modeling (zebrafish and mice models), this project aims at a thorough understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the observed anomalies.

The Center for Medical Genetics Ghent, headed by Prof. Dr. A. De Paepe, is an international reference center for heritable connective tissue disorders. As such, our center holds a large clinical database and tissue/DNA bank of patients with cutis laxa that can be used for research purposes. Our center has a vast experience with several molecular techniques and up-to-date technologies. We have expertise in a whole range of functional research techniques, both in vitro as in animal models.

PhD fellowship Job Requirements

Profile

The candidate is expected to have graduated as a physician or in bio-engineering sciences (no later than September 30th, 2012). He/she has to have a high level of curiosity and he/she should be willing to work hard in order to obtain a PhD degree in medical sciences. He/she should agree to work with animal models.
