    Senior Environmental Consultant - Soil and Groundwater Management

    for our team in Rijswijk, Netherlands.

    Responsibilities: 

    This is a technical role in one of Shell’s major project hubs. The team based at Rijswijk Office delivers top quality in-house technical assurance for Shell’s assets in Europe, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA), including upstream, downstream and retail.

    The primary purpose of this position is to provide high-level strategic technical advice on Soil and Groundwater and Water Resource Management Issues, enabling Projects & Technology to provide competitive services and successful projects for Shell and Joint Venture customers.

    Current focus for Upstream is water resource management and environmental monitoring related to development of unconventional gas plays.

    Current focus for Downstream is providing high-level technical assurance on sitecharacterisation, conceptual site models, risk assessments and remediation strategies prepared by external consultants.

    The assignment will involve unique opportunities to work internationally on complex problems aimed at broadening individual exposure and skill base. Up to 30% of your time may require travel to deliver support.

    For Hydrogeologists, you will be expected to provide expertise with hydrogeologic analyses (aquifer testing, stratigraphic interpretation/correlation, etc), and be able to direct/develop site assessment programs, as well as contribute to remediation strategy development and regulatory negotiations (requires knowledge of remediation technologies and regulatory requirements).

    For Environmental/Remediation Engineers, you will be expected to provide expertise in testing, conceptual design, and implementation of various commonly-applied remediation technologies (SVE, Air Sparging, Pump & Treat, etc). Plus ex-situ treatment technologies and with fate & transport aspects of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater. You will also contribute to remediation strategy development and regulatory negotiations.

    Duties will include:
     

    • Support environmental management strategies across Upstream and Downstream projects,including detailed groundwater supply,protection and dispsoal studies,for multiple sites and ventures.
    • Support development of risk management strategies for sustainable use and protection of resources.
    • Manage technical peer review processes to ensure overall best practice is being maintained.
    • Maintain relationship management efforts with regulators and stakeholders,in relation to technical delivery of environmental protection and water management solutions.
    • Support negotiations with regulatory authorities,governmental officials, 3rd party stakeholders, NGOs and other potentially responsible parties.
    • Drive first quartile HSSE performance culture.
    • Support management of third party environmental consultants and their technical delivery performance.
    • Drive adoption of best practice process for managing SGW risks across the area of responsibility.
    • Ensure that the group environmental standards and compliance requirements are known, understood and met by businesses on all sites under operational control.
    • As a senior technical person on the team, you will be responsible to help set strategic direction of the team, lead small teams or projects, and coach and mentor junior staff.
    • Developing relationships with internal business stakeholders
    • Develop deep understanding of business drivers to develop appropriate risk management strategies.
    • Identify regional and global key water resource issues,business priorities and projects,and assist development of associated advocacy campaigns.

    Senior Environmental Consultant Job Requirements

    Requirements: 

    You will have a Masters Degree or PhD Environmental/Civil/Chemical Engineering, Water Engineering, Geological Science, or related discipline with substantial experience in upstream oil & gas projects, and be able to demonstrate considerable team leading skills.

    Substantial practical experience working in a groundwater resource or a contamination related role, for extractive industry or regulatory agency, or an independent consultancy. 

    Experience of groundwater issues related to oil & gas exploration and production activities would be an advantage.

    The working language of Shell is English and candidates must be able to work effectively in written and spoken English. Fluency and/or working knowledge of one or more other languages, whilst in no way essential, would be an advantage. 

    You will possess a high level of technical knowledge within your area of expertise. 

    And additionally, you will have:

    • Sufficient experience to make value-added contribution to Advocacy programs designed to communicate Shell’s technical position on key soil and groundwater issues, to policy makers, regulators, and other stakeholders.
    • Capacity to interface with internal Shell business customers, and external consultants and contractors, to communicate Shell’s technical specifications and requirements, providing specialist guidance, where appropriate.
    • Demonstrated ability to deliver through others by leading small teams and coach and mentoring of junior staff.
    • Strong technical expertise, supported by sound academic qualifications, relevant practical experiences, and a commitment to continuing professional development.
    • Recognized expertise in at least one key area of soil and groundwater or water resource management.
    • Desire and ability to contribute cooperatively in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment.
    • Proven interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with customers and external consultants.Ability to deliver on multiple simultaneous projects and the flexibility to adapt to ever-changing business needs
