    Simulation and Modelling Engineer Job Description

    Space Applications Services performs space system and software engineering for the European Space Agency(ESA), National Space Agencies and the space industry. We are involved in international unmanned and manned spacecraft programmes. We require staff, wishing to join our team to work in a dynamic international environment for the following position:

    Simulation and Modelling Engineer (ENGSERV-SME-2013-02)

    Tasks and Responsibilities

    The position of Simulation and Modelling Engineer covers the areas of Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE), databases and simulation benches, including those used in software validation facilities and spacecraft AIT, ground data processing systems and ground facilities software. 

    The work will be performed at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

    The position will include the following tasks and responsibilities:

    • Modelling of systems (including spacecraft, ground segment and other required auxiliary systems). 
    • Elaboration, development and promotion of tools for distributed and collaborative engineering.
    • Support for mission simulation, science operations planning and scheduling and experiment operations verification.
    • Elaboration, development and promotion of the concept of generic simulation test-beds (such as ATB), applicable for different projects, including preparation and promotion of relevant standards.
    • Real-time simulation infrastructure and tools based on different platforms, including LINUX environments. This infrastructure can support both hardware-in-the-loop and man-in-the loop simulation.
    • Visualisation and graphical user interaction on different levels.
    • Maintenance of the EGSE- SCOS based reference facility and Space System Database reference facility to support prototyping of new technology.
    • Participation in the definition of standards for ground system and operations, electrical test facilities and modelling and simulation in the context of ECSS and ESA internal standardisation.
    • Support to ESA project teams in activities related to the procurement of EGSE for space systems and the development of space system database software and utilization.

    Simulation and Modelling Engineer Job Requirements

    Qualifications and Experience

    Applicants should have a University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent and several years of extensive experience in software engineering, software development and configuration control methods. 

    Furthermore, candidates are required to have:

    Hands-on experience in:

    • Programming languages: C++ , Java (optional).
    • User interface development: Qt or alternatively other graphical toolkits like MFC, GTK+, SWT/Swing.
    • Operating systems: Windows and Linux.

    Skills:
    • Knowledge of Space Systems and Space System Engineering.
    • Fluent in English.
    • High level of flexibility.
    • Good organization skills, good communication skills.
    • Knoweledge of the following is an asset:
    • Mac OS-X , Unix systems.
    • 3D graphics: OpenGL, OpenSceneGraph, Direct3D, Databases: MySQL, Oracle, etc.
    • Web development: J2EE or NET.
