Project Engineer Research (Composites and Adhesives) Job Description

The Project Engineer Research provides expert advice on the technical performance of ships to the relevant departments within the Damen group, such that the ships that are sold both now and in the future satisfy the specific technical requirements. 

For our department we are searching for a Project Engineer Research which is specialized in the design of ship structures made of composites or which have adhesively bonded joints.

Department Information

The Research Department provides specific technical support for the Product Groups (project/proposal and project/management departments), Engineering Services and affiliates in the fields of naval and mechanical engineering. Research undertakes specific studies for the development of ships by the Product Groups and to expand the knowledge base. This research can be divided into 5 categories, that is to say:

• Material Study, e.g. determining the operational life of a ship
• Study on forces such as speed and tensile strength, as well as mechanical equipment on board;
• Health, Safety & Environment aspects, such as ergonomics, noise and vibration levels;
• Movement; such as manoeuvring and oscillation;
• Operational applications; which type/concept for which application. Special calculation methods were developed by Research for this purpose.

• In this function close cooperation is required with our Design & Proposal, Engineering and Production departments.
• This requires a flexible customer oriented approach while considering all possible options.
• Your job would be to answer questions arising from these departments and therefore you are involved in several stadia of the design. To answers these questions in fundamental way analytical tools are used as well as finite element analysis.
• Knowledge of the programs Matlab and NX CAE are preferred. To provide additional value to the answers a creative, innovative way of thinking is required.
• To get a thoroughly understanding of the structure internal and external research is a part of the scope.
• Assisting with the evaluation of the technical performance of completed ships during sea trials, taking into account such variables as sea current and wind speed.

Project Engineer Research (Composites and Adhesives) Job Requirements

• Bsc or Msc Maritime Technology, Aerospace Technology or Mechanical Engineering;
• Specialisation:  Composites and Adhesives;
• 1 or 2 years experience, preferably just graduated;
• Dutch word and speech fluently or willing to learn Dutch;
• English word and speech fluently
• Practical attitude, Customer focused, Goal-oriented, Analytical.
