RiSE - Roche internship for Scientific Exchange - in Molecular Pharmacology & Biomarker Section, Ophthalmology - Engineering of Retinal Drug Delivery Strategies (9 months)

The Ophthalmology Discovery and Biomarker Area located in Basel, Switzerland oversees the discovery, research and development of novel treatments for Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Macular Edema and Glaucoma, which are all among the leading causes of blindness. The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) offers the most talented postgraduate students the opportunity to enhance their competencies and to gain valuable work experience with us.

One such approach involves the development of sustained release, targeted drug delivery vehicles to enable long term targeted therapy of retinal diseases using a host of therapeutic payloads. The RiSE intern will play a major role in developing these technologies in order to facilitate clinical translation of retinal drug delivery technologies. 

During the internship your tasks will include:

• Working with a team of chemists, engineers, and biologists to develop novel retinal drug delivery devices based on polymers, lipids, and/or other biomaterials.
• Evaluating drug carrier sensitivity, specificity, and toxicity using established in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases.
• Analyzing and reporting experimental results through publications and presentations, as well as exchanging information with external collaborators

• Enrolled in PhD or MD program at a university
• Strong experience in bioconjugate chemistry and synthesis and characterization of drug delivery devices based on polymers, lipids, hydrogels, and/or other biomaterials.
• Solid experience in methods used to test drug delivery systems, including spectroscopy, HPLC, FTIR, DLS, TGA, and DSC.
• Basic knowledge or experience using ocular disease animal models to study ocular drug delivery
• Highly motivated to work in a team and contribute to a collaboration with academic partners and have a great interest in acquiring novel techniques and gaining scientific knowledge
• Fluent in written and oral English
