Mechanical Engineer (Fluidic Systems) Job in , , Switzerland

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Mechanical Engineer (Fluidic Systems) Job Description

    Introduction
Mechanical Engineer in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), Detector Technology Group (DT), Fluidic Systems Section (FS).

    You will join:

    • The Experimental Physics Department.
    • The Detector Technologies (DT) group, which participates in the development, construction and operation of particle detectors for experiments at CERN. This comprises detector consolidation and upgrade projects as well as infrastructure and services for experiments.
    • The Fluidic Systems Section, whose remit is to design, prototype, construct, commission, operate and maintain fluidic systems (gas and cooling) for detectors in CERN experiments. It has also the mandate to perform selective R&D in areas relevant to novel detector thermal management, gas systems and for the upgrade of the existing systems in view of higher detector performances and sustainable operation.

As a Mechanical Engineer in the Fluidic Systems Section, initially you will:
    • Take a leading role in the design process, supervising designers and external contractors in the 3D modelling execution and production of construction drawings both for the CO2 cooling and the gas projects.
    • Participate in the design, construction and testing of the next generation CO2 cooling systems for experiments.
    • Make thermo-mechanical calculations and fluid-dynamics calculations related to the projects under design.

At a later stage, you will:
    • Take responsibility for the industrialization process of the new CO2 cooling systems designed in the section.
    • Take active role in the collection of requirements and the fine tuning of the CO2 system design for one of the subdetectors, targeting the use of CO2 cooling in the phase II upgrade.
      • Participate in the commissioning and operation of CO2 cooling systems, including participation in the section stand-by duty service.

Mechanical Engineer (Fluidic Systems) Job Requirements

The experience required for this post is:

    • Demonstrated experience in the design of fluidic systems (preferably CO2 cooling systems), 3D modelling and production of construction drawings.
    • Proven practice in mechanical and thermal calculations.
    • Initial experience in operation and maintenance of detector cooling systems.
    • Experience in coordinating projects involving academic and industrial partners.

The technical competencies required for this post are:
    • 3D & 2D technical drawing: CATIA v5 software as a preference, production of industrial standard construction drawings.
    • Thermal analysis and modelling.
    • Fluid-mechanics design.
    • Design of detector cooling systems with focus on low temperature CO2 cooling systems.
    • Maintenance and operation of detector cooling systems.

Mechanical Engineer (Fluidic Systems) Application Information
