Archive and Data Access Engineer Job Description

We are currently looking for an Archive and Data Access Engineer, with operational experience of working within the Climate, Meteorological or Oceanographic environments, to join our international team of young and inspiring engineers and industry professionals, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector.

This role is routed in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society!

Background
The Data Centre Operations Team supports the archiving and data access services for the permanent storage of EUMETSAT’s satellite data and the discovery, search and access of this data by the user community.

In preparation of EUMETSAT’s next Generation Geostationary Satellite Programme (Meteosat Third Generation, MTG) the Archive and Data Access Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the successful and complete routine archiving of data and products from MTG satellites and their access by the users.

 Duties

• Specify and evolve a hosted processing service offering and coordinate management approval;
• Conceptually develop, with a wide network of partners, Collaborative Processing Environments in several fields of thematic application of Earth Observation data, Numerical Weather Prediction data, etc.
• Coordinate and, with first- and second-level support resources, assist user on-boarding to the hosted processing in relevant cloud environments of EUMETSAT and partners;
• Coordinate the availability and provisioning of relevant input datasets on the systems identified in the use cases;
• Report on system performance, usage and the fulfilment of relevant SLA’s and KPI's;

Archive and Data Access Engineer Job Requirements

• Minimum two years of recent practical experience in the following:
  • Working in Unix / Linux environments
  • Scripting (Python, Perl, Bash) and/or Programming (Java, C++)
  • Working with Relational Databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
• Web Service development experience (API, XML, JavaScript);
• Knowledge of software engineering, as well as verification and validation test methods;
• Excellent problem-solving skills, a pro-active attitude and the ability to work autonomously with a minimum of supervision under high workloads.

• Hands-on experience with Earth Observation data and formats (e.g. netCDF, HDF, BUFR, GRIB);
• Experience in using XML for the definition of meta-data, specification of configuration files, and data format representation;
• Use of automated Software Test Tools for regression testing of new software releases (e.g. JUnit, QF Test);
