PURPOSE OF ROLE
We are looking for a superb Senior iOS Software Engineer who is excited by, and loves working within iOS. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and demonstrate your Software Engineering be skills working in a leading, cutting edge, Service Oriented Architecture.
You will be involved in the design, development and support of the products and services that form the foundation of the BBC’s output on mobile platforms. You’ll enjoy being part of a team that will at the forefront of mobile development for the BBC, working across a range of services and products delivered via dedicated apps or mobile browsers to all the major existing and emerging platforms. You will have a passion for software and technical innovation and enjoy being involved in the complete lifecycle from scoping through to testing and ongoing maintenance.
You will have a strong allegiance to agile and test-driven development practices such as Scrum and Behaviour Driven Development. You are very much a communicator and team player who understands what is required to build and deliver household name services such as BBC iPlayer.
As well as delivering solid application architecture, it is desirable that you are strongly user interface driven with a passion for delivering industry-leading user experiences combined with a keen sense for visual detail. You will have solid experience in core native UI components as well as the ability to build bespoke components as required by design.
SCOPE OF ROLE- KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- To develop, test, release and document applications using best software engineering practices to ensure timely service delivery and ease of maintenance.
- To provide time and resource estimates to assist in the planning of projects.
- To assist the operations team with service launches by providing timely adoption documentation, training and assistance with problem resolution.
- To provide technical advice to the editorial and design teams on new application concepts and to establish their feasibility through prototypes.
- To develop tools and methodologies to improve the effectiveness of the development process.
- To collaborate effectively with other technical teams to exploit new technologies to enhance the applications and service infrastructure.
- To keep abreast of developments in software engineering and technologies particularly related to mobile devices.
- To review the work of other team members and to provide assistance as directed.
- To assist with training of new team members and trainees as required.
Senior Software Engineer (iOS) – Mobile Platforms Job Requirements
Essential
- Extensive real world iOS experience
- A solid grounding in OOP analysis and design.
- An enjoyment of working in and with high performing teams
- A constant urge to improve ways of working and best practices
- Experience with Agile/Scrum project management methodologies
- An appreciation of good user experience and prepared to be the users’ advocate
- An appreciation of BBC output and a passion for technology in the new media environment
- A track record of producing maintainable code within collaborative environments
- Experience of source control systems such as SVN
- Ability to rapidly acquire new software skills and to work with new technologies
Desirable - Experience of other native mobile development platforms e.g. Android
- Utilising open web technologies such as JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3 within a native application environment and experience developing mobile websites
- Test and Behaviour Driven Development with knowledge and experience of software testing techniques including: unit testing with GHUnit, and behaviour driven development using Cucumber and automated testing technology such as Calabash, Frank etc.
Qualifications - Degree in Computer Science or equivalent (2:1 or above), or equivalent experience

- Ability to work with producers and designers to translate user requirements into technical specifications.
- Ability to communicate at all levels and to translate technical jargon for non-technical staff.
