    Role Summary/Purpose

    The Design to Cost Engineer functions as a key member of the Integrated Product Development Team to ensure that cost effective, working solutions that meet both the customers’ and regulatory requirements are developed. 

    The Design to Cost Engineer is responsible for driving cost out of the design and manufacture of complex aero-structure

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Understand the programme bid baseline and cost model 
    • Understand the scope of design work and how that affects the bid baseline 
    • Determine the project teams cost target objectives based the scope of work and to set up a cost ladder 
    • Create a DTC plan to align with the design plan identifying when cost reduction activities need to take place to support the design process 
    • Understand the cost impact of design changes ensuring they are fully assessed and implemented in a cost efficient manner. The cost ladder should be amended accordingly. 
    • As a member of the Hamble cost reduction team, work with all disciplines to generate cost reduction initiatives 
    • Build an engagement programme with engineering, manufacturing and supply chain to explore cost reduction opportunities 
    • Interact with suppliers as required to ensure cost effective components are designed 
    • Plan and manage the engineering activities necessary to progress modifications through the Configuration Control Board (CCB) where they are accepted by the business and passed to the design teams for implementation. 
    • Maintain the Design to Cost tracker detailing the generation and implementation of ideas, the forecast cost saving, risks /opportunities and the target date for implementation 
    • Offer guidance to design teams on cost efficient manufacturing methods and component selection, drawing on external support as required 
    • Develop design guides giving advice on product selection and cost 
    • Manage cost reduction activities, organising cost reduction workshops, lessons learned forums and visits to the manufacturing facility to develop product improvement plans 
    • Attend the Configuration Control Board as required 
    • Attend Design and Engineering reviews contributing on cost reduction activities as required
    • Develop tools and processes to in support of DTC activities 
    • When required, be prepared to travel to support project activities worldwide. This may include prolonged periods away from Hamble

    Design to Cost Engineer Job Requirements

    Qualifications/Requirements

    • Experience of metallic and composite design in an aerospace or related industry 
    • Experience of aircraft production methods and processes. 
    • An understanding of planning and estimating techniques 
    • Knowledge of Airbus development processes 
    • Knowledge of Geometrical Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).  
    • Literate with Microsoft Office tools, Excel / Word / Project. 
    • Qualified to HNC/Degree level in a relevant engineering subject or similar level of knowledge and experience.

    Desired Characteristics
    • The ability to work in a high-pressure environment, whilst maintaining engineering integrity. 
    • Self-motivated individual, able to work from own initiative. 
    • Good teamwork, communication and presentation skills.
