Researcher / Senior Researcher: Mobile Core Network Job Description

The Network Research Group (NRG) within DOCOMO Communications Laboratories Europe (DOCOMO Euro-Labs) is at the forefront of the 5G mobile network evolution. We impact the new core network architecture through IPR creation and support in the most relevant standardization bodies. NRG aims to solve the key technological challenges of the 5G core network to realize cost reduction and business expansion in the challenging future network environment. Key topics such as network and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), function and service composition and total cost of ownership of new technological paradigms are at the heart of our research interests.

Task Description:

• Perform research in the area of functional architecture optimizations to the future mobile core network leveraging on virtualization technologies, define the corresponding interfaces and derive IPRs for standardization opportunities.
• Implement the proposed solutions in proof of concepts using state of the art building blocks, including open source solutions and cloud technologies.
• Assess the impact of open source solutions on carrier grade mobile networks, perform gap analysis with respect to the relevant standards and identify the required development.
• Close inter-working with the standardization team at DOCOMO Euro-Labs, in coordination with NTT DOCOMO standardization strategies on relevant standardization bodies (main focus on 3GPP and ETSI NFV).
• Contribute to the NRG planning and be responsible for project execution, research activities and milestones within the expected quality and time.
• Perform periodic state of the art analysis on relevant virtualization technologies applied to mobile networks and research initiatives on future core network architectures.
• Cooperate with industrial partners (vendors and operators) and relevant research institutions (academic and institutes) in goal oriented manner.
• Disseminate research and investigation results internally and externally.
• Facilitate knowledge sharing by creating and maintaining detailed and comprehensive reports and documents, through technical presentations to colleagues from both DOCOMO Euro-Labs and NTT DOCOMO.
