    EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency. Its role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide.

    EUMETSAT also operates several Copernicus missions on behalf of the European Union and provide data services to the Copernicus marine and atmospheric services and their users.

    As an intergovernmental European Organisation, EUMETSAT has 30 Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.)

    Spacecraft Operations Engineer (VN 17/34) Job Description

    Are you able to support our Copernicus Sentinel-3 Spacecraft Operations Team providing engineering activities including flight operations and the preparation for operations of planned future launches and commissioning? If so then we’d love to hear from you.
     
    EUMETSAT is the European satellite agency for monitoring weather and climate. Bringing together the resources of 30 Member States, we develop and operate a range of satellite systems surveying the atmosphere, ocean and climate that deliver information 24 hours a day. Our data is vital to weather forecasts that enable us to protect lives and property as well as monitoring the changing climate. EUMETSAT is now developing the next generation of satellite systems, shaping its long-term future.
     
    We are inviting applications from engineers with experience of the space sector and keen to work in a high availability, 24/7 operational environment. The role will give you the opportunity to support the planning and execution of routine operations for the current Copernicus Sentinel 3 (S-3) satellites, as well as participating in the operational preparation activities for the future S-3 satellites.

    Within the Copernicus Sentinel-3 (S-3) Spacecraft Operations Team, the S-3 Spacecraft Operations Engineer participates in all activities related to flight operations and the preparation for operations of S-3 satellites, including preparation for the launch, commissioning and operations of the recurrent S-3 satellites (S-3B, C & D) in cooperation with ESA. EUM/VN(17)34 2

    The main duties will be as follows:

    • Support routine flight operations of Sentinel-3A and then of a constellation of up to four Sentinel-3 satellites;
    • Take direct responsibility for the satellite system operations (;
    •  Support the coordination of flight operations with system level operations, such as mission planning and scheduling;
    • With a team of operations engineers and analysts, coordinate the development, validation and maintenance of S-3 spacecraft procedures, databases and other operations items and tools;
    • Participate in the management of the technical interfaces with ESA and the industrial support to S-3 flight operations;
    • Assist in the provision of training to the S-3 Mission Control Centre operations personnel;
    • Support the preparation for launch, commissioning and operations of the recurrent S-3 satellites (S-3B, C & D) ;
    • Deputise for the S-3 Spacecraft Operations Manager as required;
    • On request, support activities for operations preparation of other Low Earth Orbit (LEO) missions.

    Spacecraft Operations Engineer (VN 17/34) Job Requirements

    Along with a university degree (or equivalent) in engineering, you shall ideally have skills/experience in each of the following areas:

    • experience in the field of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite operations, preferably gained during the development or operations of an Earth Observation space system
    • ability to understand and synthesise complex issues, coupled with great interpersonal and organisational skills
    • ability to communicate technical concepts in formal documents and verbal presentations
    • personal initiative and action orientation demonstrated through professional experience
     
    Skills/experience in the following would be considered an advantage:
    • knowledge of Satellite System design and/or Satellite Monitoring and Control Principles
    • experience of managing small teams
    • experience of training other personnel

    A good working knowledge of the English language, both spoken and written, is essential; knowledge of French would be desirable.

    Spacecraft Operations Engineer (VN 17/34) Application Information

    This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,443 per month (net of internal tax) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year. In addition to basic salary, EUMETSAT offers attractive benefits.
