    Prototyping Shop Manager Job Description

    What will you do as Prototyping Shop Manager?
    In this challenging role you are responsible to lay down the groundwork which enables you to build the complete prototype team for Lightyear with the goal to produce a sustainable product with excellent quality. We are looking for an automotive prototyping expert to create prototypes that are continuously improved. You'll work together with engineering to make sure that Lightyear One prototypes meet the targeted quality levels. You will work with an enthusiastic group of talented engineers; a mix between young and experienced people and you will have the opportunity to create your own dreamteam. The responsibilities are:

    • Manage the prototype shop production and the prototype team
    • Work with system engineers to deliver production intent vehicle systems on the prototypes, be in close contact with engineering to secure designs for manufacturing feasibility.
    • Work with all relevant stakeholders to determine build schedule​
    • Design prototype level parts and systems for shop manufacturing
    • Use DFM and DF Prototyping to make sure parts can be fabricated quickly and according a high quality standard
    • Work with technicians to create new and improve existing processes to improve speed and quality
    • Schedule all the prototype production in agreement with the other factory departments (logistics, maintenance)
    • Define and plan new features of the build system (facilities, machines, investments)
    • Determine and keep track of the prototyping shop budget
    • Define which activities will be outsourced
    • Assist production during start-up phases
    • Build and maintain work instructions for prototype vehicle assembly and retrofit projects​
    • Responsible for quality, timely maintenance and upgrades of prototype test vehicles
    • Ensure reporting of product faults/concerns is timely and accurate, track and support resolution into product updates
    • Maintain safety, order and cleanliness in the whole prototype shop

    Prototyping Shop Manager Job Requirements

    What do we expect from a Prototyping Shop Manager at Lightyear?
    To succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear, pro-activity, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. In addition, we are looking for someone with an ambitious attitude who learns from the past (tried and tested) but who is especially open to transforming new developments or ideas into the "tried and tested" of the future! You are also someone with a high sense of responsibility and a cooperative attitude. You like short lines of communication. You have excellent communication skills, you are a self starter with a ‘can do’ mentality. You can create/build from scratch, you are committed, punctual, quality minded, a team player, flexible, stress resilient and of course a fast learner. Furthermore you'll bring:

    • A Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or any other relevant study. 
    • At least 5 years experience in building prototypes environment and/ or pre-series vehicles development
    • You speak Dutch and English fluently (German is preferred)
    • You have an extensive and proven track record in prototyping and pre-series vehicle development
    • A strong understanding and experience in a prototype and fabrication shop processes
    • Attention to details and to safety
    • Ability to read mechanical drawings and specifications (with your eyes closed and upside down ;-))
    • A structured, independent and results-oriented working approach 
    • Excellent skills in teamwork, coordination and communication
    • Ability to solve problems quickly in a dynamic work environment with tight and challenging milestones 
    • Passion for building car or other vehicles in your free time and you have the portfolio to prove it
    • Knowledge on composites is a big plus
    • Knowledge of high end CAD software such as NX, Pro Engineer or CATIA V5/V6
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
    • Knowledge of ERP packages is preferred (INFOR LN is a big plus)
    • Availability for 40 hours per week
