Scientific Director Neuroscience Job Description

To deliver the growth objectives of the global NS franchise, Janssen R&D seeks to optimize drug discovery and develop transformational products of greatest benefit to patients with diseases of the Central Nervous System. The position of Scientific Director within the Neuroscience Biology organisation in Beerse has been created to facilitate the identification of new targets and approaches towards the amelioration of the symptoms of AD, primarily through the modulation of synaptic transmission. The Director will work as part of a multidisciplinary team working on both disease modifying and symptomatic treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease.

The main responsibilities of a Scientific Director Neuroscience are:

• Act as an innovative scientific leader to develop new Alzheimer’s disease symptomatic treatment approaches
• Lead a team of scientists and technicians engaged in drug discovery approaches targeting synaptic function and neurotransmission
• Play a key role in the shaping the strategy of the AD discovery portfolio, particularly with respect to symptomatic approaches
• Serve as a scientific expert in the area of synaptic function and provide strategic and scientific recommendations on emerging opportunities
• Build relationships across JNJ sectors and with other companies, foundations, academia, or other potential partners to support the NS Franchise
• Support and advance external partnerships as a key member of the NS scientific management team, and serve as a scientific champion or liaison for internal adoption.

Scientific Director Neuroscience Job Requirements

What does Johnson & Johnson require of a Scientific Director Neuroscience:

• The candidate must have an advanced Degree (Ph.D., M.D. or MD, PhD) and at least 10 years of independent research studying synaptic function and be a recognised expert in the field
• Should be experienced in either electrophysiological, biochemical and/or imaging techniques to study synaptic function
• Have demonstrated experience of directing research independently and an excellent publication record
• Ideally, will have pharmaceutical industry experience with overall focus on neuroscience research, including drug discovery experience
• Have demonstrated skills in leading drug discovery programs
• Have the ability to operate within a multidisciplinary team
• Possess an enthusiastic, flexible and creative approach to problem solving
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Ability to integrate multiple R&D disciplines into a successful strategy and project plan
• Expert knowledge of the drug development or drug discovery process and the competitive environment
• Strong problem solving skills for developing creative solutions and meeting project objectives
• Demonstrated influence, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to influence without clear reporting authority
• Significant work experience in a leadership position in a team matrix environment
• Strong planning and tracking skills
• Demonstrated ability to use strategic thinking and contingency planning to achieve for J&J Pharma objectives
• Strong oral and written communications skills
